SECTOR 07 // NARRATIVE ENGINE ONLINE

STORY BIBLE

Premise

A city runs on a Narrative Engine that turns headlines into reality. Dommy, a courier who reads the originals, discovers that the city's record of itself is being rewritten in real time โ€” and that the only way to keep the truth is to classify it before the engine does.

Tone

Dark comedy, psychological horror, technical satire and mystery with dry British humour. The horror is bureaucratic: the machine is polite, the paperwork is lethal, and the joke is always on the person still reading.

Characters

  • Dommy

Player character โ€” courier and reluctant archivist
    Personality
Dry, stubborn, allergic to being told what a headline means.
    Motivation
To find out what the city looked like before it was described.
    Voice direction
Understated, deadpan, clipped. Never raises their voice; the city does that for them.
    Arc
From courier who delivers the narrative to archivist who preserves what it erases.
  • The Archivist

    Keeper of the overwritten originals
    Personality
Exhausted, precise, secretly hopeful. Speaks in citations.
    Motivation
To hand the original record to someone who will not publish it carelessly.
    Voice direction
Measured and archival, with a flicker of static on the word 'original'.
    Arc
From gatekeeper of a private archive to a collaborator who trusts the player with the source.
  • The Operator

    Voice on the emergency channel
    Personality
Cheerful, procedural, entirely unbothered by the apocalypse.
    Motivation
To keep the district's metrics inside acceptable bounds.
    Voice direction
Bright customer-service cadence delivering catastrophic instructions.
    Arc
From helpful dispatcher to the realisation that the metrics are the monster.
  • The Editor

Curator of the city's published record
    Personality
Immaculate, ruthless, genuinely believes in clarity.
    Motivation
To make the city legible, whatever has to be removed to do it.
    Voice direction
Smooth editorial baritone; corrects your grammar mid-threat.
    Arc
From unseen authority to the face of the engine's editorial violence.
  • The Critic

    Professional doubter and reluctant ally
    Personality
Sarcastic, incisive, incapable of accepting a claim at face value.
    Motivation
To be the one who was right about the engine first.
    Voice direction
Fast, wry, punctuated by a laugh that never quite lands.
    Arc
From contrarian nuisance to the player's sharpest instrument for testing evidence.
  • Narrative Workers

    The engine's anonymous staff
    Personality
    Collectively weary, individually invisible.
    Motivation
To finish the shift without being written out of it.
    Voice direction
Overlapping fragments of shift handover, half-heard through walls.
    Arc
From background noise to the human cost the engine was built to hide.
